The stateless experience
Nowhere was created as an attempt to educate the general public about statelessness and its surrounding issues. Including the issue of how stateless people are treated within society and have little to no rights.
By bringing awareness and attention to these issues,
the aim was to lead to political change by public demand and thereby stop the dehumanising treatment stateless people receive from the bureaucratic system. Both here in the UK and in other nations. Additionally, Nowhere is a direct criticism of the Home Office, together with other UN nations, as they do not own up to their responsibility to protect this vulnerable group within society, as agreed upon in the UNHCR conventions of statelessness.
Nowhere, the installation
The Nowhere is a mobile installation, constructed from two concrete walls that runs parallel with each other. This is to create the illusion of isolation in public - just like stateless people. Cut off from society.
The reason for the Nowhere installation to be mobile, is so it can be placed outside different locations that have any significance to the stateless experience. Including outside the Lunar House in Croydon, South London, which is where the Home Office process stateless applications, border lands, beaches, outside UN congresses etc. The location can be either political, symbolic or emotional.
The written content on the installation explains a bit about the stateless experience.
Stateless: a ghost, an alien, a non-person. Invisible.
At least in the eyes of the government
Going nowhere, the podcast
The Cover Design for the podcast is a symbol of the stateless experience. The footprint shows a person's presence, however, it is invisible to others. By listening to the podcast, the listener will get a chance to step into a stateless shoes for a moment, to better understand their walk through life.
The Going Nowhere podcast was made as an attempt to convey a sense of empathy. Both for the narrative but also as a way to educate the listener about the stateless experience.
